BHP loses bid to appeal $48-billion dam collapse judgment

Australian mining company BHP Group Ltd. was on Monday denied permission to appeal a London court ruling that it is liable for the 2015 collapse of a dam in southeastern Brazil, in a lawsuit potentially worth up to 36 billion British pounds ($48.3 billion), Reuters reported. London’s High Court ruled in November that the company should have ceased raising the height of the dam before the structure failed. The collapse of the Fundao dam released a wave of toxic sludge and remains the worst environmental disaster in Brazil’s history.
